Well the neatest thing to do is create a <420px thumbnail linked to the full-sized image: no breaking up the message with link text and details on demand for the reader.
I measure this message window as 440px wide, so I'm guessing that's why pictures are limited to 420. I don't know what happens to the layout if a picture wider than that is posted. What limit would you set?
Edit: actually, I've a feeling the picture just gets cut off on the right after 420px. I think I've seen that on old ICB posts after the forum was ported to the new site.

Which is about optimal if you want to be able to use the site on a Smartphone. Yes, the central column could be made bigger but if would mean a lot of work repositioning the rest of the elements.
I'm viewing this on a 2400px wide screen. The trick is to only use half the screen (email is in the other half).

I wouldn't agree. On an 480x800 screen it's too small to read, so you have to zoom anyway.
