As the title says, did my first ever brew today from a kit. A stout.

I was going to, but didn't, add some good quality drinking chocolate to try and get a chocolate taste / character. Would this have worked or ruined the the batch?

Also the hydrometer was displaying at 50 when floating. Is this 1050 / 6.5%

Reckon I've caught the bug.

The overall winner in NHC for 2013 was a stout where brewer used Bournville coco powder :D

Great stuff. The cocoa may have worked, you want the least fat possible in it though. Better off getting a beer or two under your best before getting creative anyway.

Your hydrometer reading 1.050 should be right, seems in the normal range anyway. However it wont/shouldn't end up at 6.5% ABV, that would require it finishing at 1.000 which is extremely unlikely and wouldn't be very nice. It'll more likely finish around 1.010 give or take a few points for 5.2ish% beer.

Just cracked open my first bottle of home brew stout. I have had better, but I have also paid to drink worse. Quiet pleased with the results overall. Molson Coors might ring :D

Hi Lads

Thanks for the encouragement.

No, I haven't met or attended any homebrew events in Limerick.

I'm open to being educated and availbe for selection for most events, respectable notice period a must.

I have had an offer on my house so hopefully I'll be back living in the city in the new year and we'll be able to arrange a few meets

Just bottled my second brew, an APA by Youngs. ABV about 5.5%, going to leave it for Easter. Reused the White Gypsy 75cl bottles, perfect for sharing
