Possibly -- though it won't dissolve as easily. As the article says, it's big quantities of sugar that are the problem, not sugar per se.

Your priming solution won't have as big an effect on flavour as the main fermentables, so even if it does work you're not going to get much value from the extra expense.

One last thing (all excire & delire on this right now), can you recommend a good brown ale brew with this starter kit, something that attempts toward one of the holy grails a beer in my opinion i.e ESB

Hi morebeerplease and welcome.

You can use DME if you want, but it actually contributes slightly less fermentable extract than sugar, so you would have to add a bit more to get the same carbonation.

Having said that, I would advise you to use plain white sugar. This is what I always use and I stand by my results.

thank you sbillings. I intended to use unrefined brown cane sugar.. do you think other than maybe a healtier option it would make a blind bit a difference?

Welcome aboard morebeerplease

Not a priming rate, no and why is brown sugar any healthier its just usually white sugar with a little molasses and some glycerol. If you want to use darker sugar use something like Muscovado, or Demerara sugar.

But something like treacle probable would
